5 desk stretches every employee should do daily

WellnessWorkzz Therapy Team4 min readMay 2026

Long hours at a screen take a toll on posture and energy. These five simple stretches take under five minutes and can be done right at the desk.

Sitting for eight hours a day quietly tightens the hips, rounds the shoulders and stiffens the neck. The good news: you don't need a gym or even to leave your chair to undo most of it. A handful of targeted stretches, done little and often, keeps the body loose and the mind alert.

Aim to run through this sequence once in the morning and once after lunch. None of it requires changing out of work clothes, and the whole set takes under five minutes.

1. Seated neck release

Sit tall, drop your right ear toward your right shoulder and let the weight of your head do the work. Hold for 20 seconds, then switch sides. This eases the upper-trapezius tension that builds up from looking down at screens and phones.

2. Shoulder rolls

Roll both shoulders backward in slow, full circles ten times, then forward ten times. It re-opens the chest and counteracts the hunched posture that creeps in over a long morning of typing.

3. Seated spinal twist

Keeping your hips facing forward, rotate your torso to the right and hold the back of your chair. Breathe, hold for 20 seconds, then twist to the left. This mobilises the spine and aids digestion after meals.

4. Wrist and forearm stretch

Extend one arm, palm up, and gently pull the fingers back toward you with the other hand. Hold for 15 seconds each side. A simple but vital habit for anyone at risk of repetitive-strain discomfort.

5. Standing hip flexor stretch

Stand, step one foot back into a shallow lunge and tuck your pelvis under until you feel a stretch at the front of the back hip. Hold 20 seconds per side. This is the single best antidote to a day spent seated.

Make it a habit

Set a recurring calendar reminder, or tie the routine to something you already do — your first coffee, the end of a meeting. Consistency beats intensity every time.
